As mentioned in previous posts, following the opening of the Courtyard Tower upgrades and improvements continue throughout Sarasota Memorial’s main campus. The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board recently gave approval to begin planning for a new wing to house the current 34-bed Comprehensive Rehabilitation Unit (CRU).
Currently located in the East Tower, the CRU is more than 30 years old, contains mostly semi-private rooms and shared bathrooms and lacks amenities such as a family lounge.
Preliminary plans call for the Retter wing, which is the hospital’s oldest building, to be torn down and a Rehab facility to be built in its place. The new building will include both inpatient and outpatient rehab services. The goal is to open a replacement CRU with all private rooms and baths in a specialized, rehab-focused setting that accommodates patients who use a variety of mobility aids.
The design and construction of the new facility will take approximately two years to complete. The project is in the initial planning stages and will move forward based on Sarasota Memorial’s financial health and community needs.
