When we think about window accidents or window safety, we often imagine a high rise building, yet studies have found that most window fall accidents actually happen from first or second stories.

You can avoid window accidents with a few simple precautions:

  • Keep cribs, beds and furniture away from the window to prevent toppling off the furniture and out the window.
  • Keep the cords to blinds and drapes out of reach.
  • Install window guards so windows can’t be opened too far, but be sure you can still remove the guards in an emergency.
  • Discourage play on porches, balconies or fire escapes that do not have adequate protective barriers or fencing.

Remember, window screens hardly work to keep bugs out, so don’t ever count on them to hold your child in.
