AMA recognizes obesity as a disease

weightlossstockphotosmallThis week, the American Medical Association officially declared obesity a disease “requiring a range of medical interventions to advance obesity treatment and prevention.”

The AMA noted that obesity rates in the United States have “doubled among adults in the last twenty years and tripled among children in a single generation.” Organizations including the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration already recognize the condition as a disease.

“More widespread recognition of obesity as a disease could result in greater investments by government and the private sector to develop and reimburse obesity treatments,” the AMA said in a statement.
