Congressman Vern Buchanan took a “technology tour” of Sarasota Memorial, getting a firsthand look at state-of-the-art new patient care areas and surgery suites.
At left, the Congressman gets a sneak peek at the hospital’s new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with Marguerite G. Malone, Ed.D., left, member of the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board, and NICU Manager Debbie Harman. The NICU, which is located in the hospital’s new Courtyard Tower, will open later in 2013. Sarasota Memorial is the only hospital in the county with a NICU and obstetrical services. The units located in the new tower replace 1950s- and 1960s-era facilities in the hospital.
Below, the Congressman visits the hospital’s new “hybrid” operating room, where surgeons, cardiologists and other specialists to perform combined open, minimally invasive, image guided and catheter-based procedures in the same operative setting – which in turn allows patients to undergo less invasive procedures for even the most complex conditions. SMH Cardiovascular Surgery Chief Jeffrey Sell, MD, second from left, and SMH CEO Gwen MacKenzie, right, describe how the hybrid room is an important springboard for collaboration in new surgical approaches.
