New clinic in Venice helps patients manage anticoagulation medications
08.29.2014 [SMH Extra]

VHCC-WebCommunity members in Venice and surrounding areas who are taking anticoagulants have a new resource to help them manage their medications: Sarasota Memorial has opened an outpatient anticoagulation clinic on N. US 41 Bypass in Venice to help residents safely manage their therapy and decrease their risk of developing dangerous bleeding or blood clots.

Doctors typically prescribe anticoagulation medication, including Coumadin, Jantoven, warfarin and low molecular weight heparin, to reduce the risk of dangerous blood clots in people who have had heart attacks, strokes or other blood clotting conditions. But it can be a delicate balancing act: taking too much increases bleeding, while taking too little increases the risk of potentially deadly blood clots.

The Venice anticoagulation clinic is open Wednesdays by appointment. It is located in the Sarasota Memorial Health Care and Urgent Care Center, 997 N. US 41 Bypass. It is one of six anticoagulation clinics the health system operates at outpatient campuses in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Patients at any level of anticoagulation therapy are welcome, but must have a referral and visit their managing physician at least once a year. For information or appointments, call (941) 917-8889 or click here.

08.22.2014 | New Moms & Dads

Back to school this year was especially exciting for my youngest, because he is now a bus rider. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, school buses are the safest vehicles on the roads, but there are still some risks involved. The greatest danger for bus riders is while getting on and/or off the […]

A newborns natural habitat is lying on the mothers (or fathers) chest, skin to skin immediately after being born and in the hours, days and weeks after. Skin to skin, means just that, baby’s bare skin against mother’s bare skin. No blankets or clothing interfering. The mother’s body will keep baby plenty warm while the […]

All the comfort of your favorite food, but healthier!
08.14.2014 | SMH Extra

A pulled pork sandwich defines comfort food for many people. But food that’s comforting doesn’t have to mean lots of fat and very little nutritional value. You can enjoy your favorite meals at home if you use healthier and fresh ingredients. Sarasota Memorial’s Windows Cafe recently served a version of pulled pork that keeps a balanced diet in mind. Mix lean pulled pork […]

Tip-Over Furniture Can Kill Kids
08.07.2014 | New Moms & Dads

It can happen in an instant: A small child pulls up on a television, dresser or computer monitor and gets critically injured when the furniture tips over. “Every parent or guardian of a young child should look around their homes and imagine what could tip over, fall off walls and injure a child. Imagining it […]
