What’s On Your Plate?
03.30.2012 [New Moms & Dads]
During pregnancy and the post-partum period, and for years to come, healthy nutrition is an important part of overall health. While your body is healing from pregnancy, and delivery, you need to give it the resources necessary to promote healing and to provide you with some much needed energy.
• Be a healthy role model for your children! They will eat the foods that you eat and healthy food choices are a learned behavior. The more healthy foods you eat the more healthy foods you’ll crave!
• Before you eat, think about what you are putting on your plate! Try to include foods from all 5 food groups throughout each day. A rainbow of color provides a variety of nutrients.
• Half of your plate should be fresh vegetables and fruits.
• Choose mostly whole grains.
• Eat lean proteins, and vary your choices between meats, poultry and fish.
• Try low fat dairy products, such as skim milk and low fat cheeses.
• Cut back on empty calories, simple sugars, salt and solid fats. Drink water instead of sugary drinks, limit sugar filled desserts.
