- Always supervise your children around animals (even the sweetest pet can become startled and attack)
- Teach your children to practice proper hand washing after handling pets.
- Children should not be allowed to kiss pets or sleep with them.
- Keep cat litter out of the reach of children.
- Keep your animals vaccinations up-to-date and free of ticks and flees.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that infants and children under 5 years old avoid contact with the following animals:
- Reptiles (lizards, snakes, and turtles)
- Amphibians (frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders)
- Baby chicks
- Ducklings
- Petting zoos
These animals can carry salmonella which can make your child very sick with diarrhea, vomiting, fevers and other symptoms.
Facts:
- The majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place and the dog usually belongs to the victim’s family or friend.
- Infants and children less than 5 years old are more likely to get diseases from animals. This is because they love to touch everything and then put their fingers in their mouths.
