A Long Haul
08.17.2010 [Campus Improvements]

Earlier this month, construction crews and 10 semi-trucks hauled away the huge 200-ton crane that played an instrumental role in the ongoing expansion of the hospital’s Critical Care Center. Once complete in 2011, the addition will house new operating rooms, pre-operative and postoperative areas, hemodialysis and a sterile processing unit. A new pedestrian bridge will connect the building to the South Garage. So what happens next in SMH’s multiphase Campus Improvement Project? The new temporary main entrance and valet area by the Waldemere Garage will open this fall. The current main entrance and canopied drop-off area will close and the Northeast Tower will be torn down to make way for construction of the new Courtyard Tower – Demolition prep work already has begun behind the draped area in the central hallway on the first floor. A new Loop Road, which will wind around the front of the campus, is scheduled to be complete in September, as will a new entry vestibule leading to the Emergency Care Center, which will help patients access the ECC more easily.
