Signs of hypoglycemia may be overlooked in older adults

seniordiabetesbloodtestloresHypoglycemia (blood glucose level that drops below 70 mg/dL.) has been recognized as one of the most common and most serious diabetes-related emergencies for older adults. In fact, a new study shows a higher rate of hospital admissions for older adults with hypoglycemia, with admission rates for hypoglycemia now exceeding those for hyperglycemia (high blood glucose level) among seniors.

Signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia may include:

  • Shakiness and trembling
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Sweating, chills and clamminess
  • Irritability or impatience
  • Confusion, including delirium
  • Rapid/fast heartbeat
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Hunger and nausea
  • Blurred/impaired vision
  • Tingling or numbness in the lips or tongue
  • Headaches
  • Weakness or fatigue

These symptoms may be overlooked in the elderly because physical and cognitive impairments from other health conditions can make it difficult to identify the signs of a diabetes-related emergency. While hypoglycemia must be immediately addressed with anyone, older adults with low blood sugar are especially vulnerable to falls and other complications. Given the risks, it’s important for seniors (and their caregivers) to become aware of the symptoms and manage their blood sugar levels.
