Do you have questions about hereditary cancer? We can help
05.14.2013 [SMH Extra]

News of Angelina Jolie’s decision to undergo a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of cancer may have you wondering whether you should get tested, too. Approximately 5-10 percent of all cancers are hereditary. Individuals are born with an altered gene passed from generation to generation that places them at increased risk of hereditary cancer. Blood tests are now available to help you assess your risk, so you and your doctor can take steps to reduce it, detect cancer in its most treatable stages – or better yet, possibly prevent it from occurring at all. If you have questions about testing or simply want to know what’s involved, clinicians with Sarasota Memorial’s genetic education/testing  program can help. Click here for more information or call (941) 917-2005.
